IVBBS
The Intercept Vector BBS was started in 1992 on a 286 with a 40 meg drive
and a 2400 baud modem as a way for 2 guys in differing towns (Mark and
Joe) a way to communicate electronically, and share programs. The
Internet, and e-mail systems were in their infancy, so this seemed the
best way to accomplish their ultimate goal. BBS'ing was popular with a lot
of people who wanted to communicate and talk about shared interests.
As an offshoot to the message areas, there were file areas where programs could
be downloaded and tried before they were purchased. So after a year of
setup and debugging The Intercept Vector BBS was ready to go public, since
the goal of these 2 guys communicating electronically had been achieved.
Shortly after going public it was noticed that the 286, and the 40 meg
drive were a little pokey, and small.
2400 baud modems were still the
fastest way to transfer data at this time. Well in 1993 it was noticed
that more speed and space were needed so The Intercept Vector BBS upgraded
to a 386 with an 80 meg drive, and a 14400 modem. By now there were about
80 file bases, and 50 message echo's. 1994 saw another upgrade since the
IVBBS was getting about 35-40 calls a day.
Next on the list was a
486dx/100 tower with about 500 megs of hard drive space and about 100
message echo's. Shortly thereafter a pair of 7 disk CDROM drives were
added to accommodate the ever increasing library of cdroms, since online
ROM rotation was getting to be a pain. 1995 saw a big switch in The
Intercept Vector BBS. It was relocated to New Lenox,IL dropped on a P75
54c with another 7 disk cd changer, and a 33,600 baud modem. The BBS was
completely reconfigured to have a total of 886 file bases, compromised of
about 75 filebases located on 8.7 gig of hard drive space, and the rest
located on 22 online CDROM drives.
More online games and activities were
added too. Recently another message network was added and this has brought
the total message echo count to about 150 different topic conversation
areas. At last count there were over 74,000 programs, and images online.
That's where The Intercept Vector BBS is today.
